She is a past Director of the American Academy of Dermatology, co-founder of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation and the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation. She is a founding member and a past president of the North American Hair Research Society, and in 2004 was awarded the Women’s Dermatologic Society’s Mentor of the Year award in recognition of a commitment to sharing her knowledge through mentorship.
