Hoewel bedoeld voor het onderwijs in de psychiatrie aan studenten geneeskunde, is het boek ook bruikbaar voor de opleiding en bij- en nascholing van andere beroepsgroepen, zoals psychiaters, huisartsen, verpleeghuisartsen, revalidatieartsen en alle psychiatrisch geïnteresseerde medisch specialisten, alsook voor gz-psychologen, klinisch psychologen, psychotherapeuten en psychiatrisch verpleegkundigen. De online leeromgeving die aan het leerboek is gekoppeld, is geheel vernieuwd. De website bevat veel casussen die ontleend zijn aan de psychiatrische praktijk, zowel in de eerste, tweede als derde lijn. Door met deze casussen te oefenen, kan de student zijn psychiatrische kennis toetsen en wordt een brug geslagen tussen theorie en praktijk.
