Roger Scruton [*1944] geldt als een van de scherpste, interessantste en meest spraakmakende filosofen uit onze tijd. Hij studeerde wijsbegeerte in Cambridge en Londen, waarna hij hoogleraar Esthetiek werd aan de universiteit van Londen en ook hoogleraar Filosofie aan de universiteit van Boston; tevens was hij gasthoogleraar aan universiteiten als Princeton, Stanford en Cambridge. Thans is hij vrijgevestigd schrijver, journalist, columnist, tv-presentator, componist en ongebonden wijsgeer. Van Scrutons filosofische hoofdwerken - 'Modern Philosophy' (1994), 'A Short History of Modern Philosophy: From Descartes to Wittgenstein' (1995; bij uitgever dezes in vertaling verschenen als 'Moderne filosofie'), 'Animal Rights & Wrongs' (1996), 'The Aesthetics of Music' (1997), 'Spinoza' (1998) - geldt 'Filosofisch denken' als een van de meest toegankelijke en lichtvoetige. In dit boek biedt Scruton op de hem eigen heldere, elegante en licht tegendraadse wijze een persoonlijke visie op filosofie als menselijke zoektocht naar wijsheid, inzicht en begrip.
