In zijn voordracht De vraag naar de techniek uit 1955 onderwerpt Martin Heidegger de instrumentele opvatting van techniek aan een kritisch onderzoek. Hij gaat daarvoor terug naar Aristoteles en diens leer van oorzakelijkheid en laat zien dat de Griekse filosoof onder technische voortbrenging nog iets heel anders verstond, namelijk een ‘wijze van ontbergen’. Op basis hiervan kan Heidegger een nieuw licht werpen op de moderne techniek, die hij analyseert als een ‘opvorderend ontbergen’, dat van al wat ermee in aanraking komt maar één ding verlangt: terstond ter plekke ter beschikking staan. De smartphone is hier een recent voorbeeld van, maar het geldt ook al voor waterleiding en lucifer. In zijn commentaar legt Gerard Visser Heideggers diepgaande beschouwing niet alleen nauwkeurig en integraal uit, maar gaat hij ook in op de herkomst van diens herneming van de zijnsvraag in de ervaring van wat Nietzsche het Europese nihilisme heeft genoemd.
