Totalitarisme. Dit begrip is de belangrijkste ideologische buit uit de Koude Oorlog, omdat het nazisme en communisme gelijkschakelt als twee even abjecte extremen ter rechter- en ter linkerzijde van onze westerse democratie. Een aanhoudende stroom aan artikels, interviews, boeken en documentaires heeft die ‘zekerheid’ onwankelbaar gemaakt in de media en publieke opinie. Intussen zijn grote delen van de archieven van de voormalige Sovjet-Unie opengesteld voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De resultaten daarvan zijn weinig bekend, maar wel hoogst opmerkelijk. Charles Ducal confronteert een aantal recente bestsellers over het Stalintijdperk met wat archiefonderzoek aan het licht heeft gebracht. Sterk aanwezig in dit essay is Hannah Arendt, als inspirerende filosoof en als auteur van het beroemde Totalitarisme uit 1951. Ducals tegendraadse politieke essay steunt niet op geloof, maar twijfelt, onderzoekt en nuanceert. Zoals van een schrijver mag worden verwacht. CHARLES DUCAL (1952) schreef negen dichtbundels, een verhalenbundel en een roman. Zijn meest recente publicaties zijn De koers van de eeuw (poëzie, 2021) en Kroniek van een verzonnen leven (roman, 2018). Van 2014 tot 2016 was hij de eerste Belgische Dichter des Vaderlands.
