Het verhaal van de 70-jarige weduwe Marijke is exemplarisch voor de manier waarop wij vaak met patiënten omgaan. De auteur laat je haar moeizame tocht doorheen de zorg mee beleven. Het draait allemaal rond de manier waarop het zorgsysteem en de zorgverstrekkers (thuiszorg, ziekenhuizen, artsen, woonzorgcentra) met zorgvragers omgaan. Hoeveel aandacht voor en empathie met hebben we voor mensen die moeten worstelen om de juiste weg te vinden naar waar ze recht op hebben? Ons zorgsysteem kraakt in zijn voegen. Het wordt stilaan onbetaalbaar, de zorgnood stijgt en er is een tekort aan zorgverstrekkers en financiële middelen. Experts en beleidsmakers zijn het erover eens: er is nood aan een grondige hervorming. Het schaakbord van de zorg lijkt ondoorgrondelijk. Maar zou niet in de eerste plaats de patiënt, de cliënt, de resident aan zet moeten zijn? Is het belangrijkste schaakstuk niet de mens op het kwetsbaarst van zijn bestaan, als hij hulpbehoevend is?
